As it turned nine years old this weekend, Twitter on Saturday (PHL time) marked the milestone with nine tweets thanking its users for their support.

Chief communications officer Gabriel Stricker also posted a blog site crediting tweeps for features like hashtags and best practices like live-tweeting.

"At our nine-year mark, we continue to say that Twitter is what it is because of the people who use it. After all, it’s because of you that we have product features like hashtags and best practices like live-Tweeting. Today, these are deeply rooted elements of Twitter and part of mainstream cultural vernacular," he said.

Twitter's nine posts reflected its nine-years-and-counting history:

1. Co-founder Jack Dorsey's first tweet when the service was still called “Twttr.”

2. User Chris Messina proposing the use of a hashtag to denote people at the same live event.

3. Twitter used by NASA to break news when the Mars Phoenix Lander found ice on Mars.

4. More breaking news - and photos - via Twitter, such as when US President Barack Obama and wife Michelle shared a hug before he appeared publicly to affirm his second presidential win. Other events included the bombs at the Boston Marathon, where Twitter became a source for updates.

5. Citizen journalism – early user Janis Krums happened to be on a ferry when a plane went down in the Hudson River.

6. Moments into movements, such as #JeSuisCharlie, #LoveConquersHate, #Jan25, #OccupyWallStreet, #BringBackOurGirls, #UmbrellaRevolution, #BlackLivesMatter, #YesAllWomen, and #IndiaWithPakistan.

7. Bizarre moments at the World Cup.

8. "And we continue to be captivated by what you create and Tweet every day," Twitter said.

9. The first Vine video from space.

"As for us, we will continue to thank you and celebrate you in the coming years as you use Twitter to reflect both the world at large and the world immediately around you," Stricker said. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
